5th of March is the National Bush Fire Day in Gambia. In this occasion, the director of Forestry Department, Smbou Nget, has highlighted the importance of the protection of the forest against fire and the illegal logging. For this purpose, the Forestry Department is asking for collaboration with civilians and other NGOs. The recent collaboration with a NGO of the likes of the ADWAC (Agency for the Development of Women and Children) has given excellent results in raising public awareness, but the anti-wildfire campaign needs to go on and involve rural communities in forest management and protection.
The Forestry Department was also given new firefighting equipment (bicycles, rakes, cutlasses and 3 motor cycles) that would improve cross border intervention against wildfire and illegal logging.
